Why publish your Portfolio here instead of a newsletter, a Discord, or a fund: the four things Autopilot does that they can't

Chris Josephs explaining why investors publish Portfolios on Autopilot rather than running a newsletter or a fund

Intro

A newsletter tells people what you bought. This buys it.

I'm Chris, one of the co-founders of Autopilot. If you already have an audience that trusts your stock picks, you have three ways to make money from it, and all three have the same problem. Your followers still have to go place the trades. Here's the fourth way.

One thing first, because we're an SEC-registered investment adviser and I have to say it. Autopilot is the app. The actual investment advice comes from Autopilot Advisers, LLC. If you want the full legal version of anything in here, it's on our legal page.

A newsletter sends a decision and hopes. A Discord posts a decision and watches half the room miss it.

On Autopilot, when you change your Portfolio, we send the orders and each follower's broker fills them, in proportion to what they allocated. Nobody has to read the post first. The gap between what you decided and what your followers hold is measured in fills, not in attention.

That's the difference between an audience and a following.

Our difference

The four things Autopilot does that a newsletter, a Discord, or a fund can't

1) A record you didn't write

Every Portfolio's record in the app is computed by us from what actual follower accounts did, net of the applicable fees. You didn't type it and you can't edit it. Neither can anyone accusing you of cherry-picking.

For a Pilot with a real record, that's the most valuable thing on the platform: a number a stranger can believe because you didn't produce it. For a Pilot without one, it's the reason to start now. The record begins on launch day and not a minute before.

2) The parts of a fund you don't have to build

A fund means custody, execution, an administrator, an auditor, compliance, and a legal structure before you've picked a single stock.

Here, followers keep their own brokerage accounts. Autopilot Advisers, LLC is the registered adviser that applies your Portfolio to those accounts. The disclosures, the agreements, and the accountability to followers sit with us.

You publish the decisions. You never hold a dollar of anyone's money, and you never have to.

3) A price you set, paid every cycle

You set your own subscription price for your Portfolios. One subscription covers everything you publish. Followers pay it on a recurring basis for as long as they follow.

It's not a fee on assets, and it doesn't depend on how much your followers have. The rest of how you're paid, including what we don't publish, is in How Pilots get paid: your subscription price, what we don't publish, and the incentives we disclose.

The record is computed by us, not written by you. That is the part a newsletter can never give you.

Conclusion

What you give up, and who this is for

1) What you give up

I want to be honest with you. You give up control of the story. The description and bio you write sit in the app as-is, next to a record you can't shape, and your followers will judge the record first.

You give up the ability to promise anything about results, because neither you nor we can.

And you give up trading anything the platform can't hold in a follower's account. Stocks and ETFs can be followed. Options, crypto, and shorts can't. If your edge lives in those, this isn't your venue. If your edge is deciding what to own and when to change it, it is.

2) Who this is for

Someone with a clear thesis, a record they'd be comfortable seeing next to a bad month, and an audience that would rather follow than transcribe.

What we look for in an application is a verifiable track record, a clear investment philosophy, and a Portfolio built to be followed safely at scale. There's no follower-count requirement. How that process runs is in From application to launch day: the review, the onboarding, the Pilot Portal, and the record that starts at zero.

TLDR: Followers' accounts follow your decisions. The record is computed by us, not written by you. Custody, execution, and compliance sit with the adviser, not with you. You set a recurring price. In exchange you give up the story, the promises, and anything that isn't a stock or an ETF. If that trade sounds right, apply.

FAQ

What does Autopilot handle for Pilots?

Turning each Portfolio change into orders across follower accounts, the adviser relationship and disclosures with followers, the subscription billing, the record in the app computed from follower accounts, and the app where followers find and follow you. You handle the Portfolio, its description and bio, your subscription price, and how you talk about it.

Do I need to start a fund to manage other people's money?

On Autopilot you don't manage other people's money at all, which is the point. Followers keep their own brokerage accounts. Autopilot Advisers, LLC is the registered adviser that applies your published Portfolio to those accounts. You publish the decisions. No custody, no execution, no administrator, and no personal advice on your side.

How is being a Pilot different from running a newsletter or Discord?

A newsletter or chat room delivers a decision and depends on each reader placing the trade. A Pilot's Portfolio change becomes orders in every follower's own brokerage account, sent by Autopilot Advisers and filled by each follower's broker, in proportion to their allocation. The Pilot also gets a record in the app computed from what follower accounts did, rather than self-reported.

Why should I publish my portfolio on Autopilot?

Because your followers' accounts follow your decisions instead of reading about them. Because every Portfolio's record in the app is computed from actual follower accounts, which you didn't produce and can't edit. Because custody, execution, compliance, and accountability sit with Autopilot Advisers, LLC rather than with you. And because you set a recurring subscription price that one subscription covers across everything you publish. Acceptance is selective, and results are never promised.
